Parson's Porch & Company

Turning Books into Bread since 2004

Parson's Porch & Book Publishing is a book publishing company with a double focus.  We focus on the needs of creative writers who need a professional publisher to get their work to market, & we also focus on the needs of others by sharing our profits with those who struggle to meet their basic needs of food, clothing, shelter and safety.

From Hope to Wholeness

Our book series, From Hope to Wholeness, was inspired by Baltimore Presbytery’s response to the death of Freddie Gray in 2015. They wanted a published book to address the violence that erupted in Baltimore after Gray’s death. Their book, From Hope to Wholeness: A Presbyterian Response to the Unrest in Baltimore in April 2015, was published by Parson’s Porch & Company in May 2016.

Because of the civil unrest around the country, we believe that words matter, especially words from thoughtful Christian pastors and church leaders. Thus, we have initiated a nationwide invitation to all of the mainstream judicatories to follow Baltimore’s lead and publish their own book to speak to the needs of their respective cities and communities.

Here are the practical steps to accomplish this task:

1 – Assemble a group of 4 or 5 editors from your presbytery who will invite preachers to submit sermons, poems, prayers, and even worship resources to be included in the book. Encourage the contributors to submit a finished document free of error.

2 – Choose a moderator for the group which will be the primary contact with the publisher.

3 – Compile the submitted material in the order that is desirable.

4 - Once the material is received and compiled, write a Foreword which adequately describes your presbytery and the intent of the book.

5 – When the material is fully collected and edited, send the manuscript to the publisher. If you have any suggestions for the cover, please inform the publisher at this time. We want to use a uniform format so every book will look similar to Baltimore’s book.

Once we receive the manuscript, we will do the rest. It is not necessary to format the manuscript. In order to meet the specifications of the printer, we have to begin with a text file. This will un-format the material, so all formatting will be lost.

When we finish our work with the book, usually in 7 – 10 days, we will send the moderator of the editors an online set of galleys to approve. At this point, the editors will have another opportunity to correct any errata. Once approved, the book will be released for publication and purchase.

While we do not charge for our publishing services, we do depend on the sale of books to finance our company. We offer a 40% discount to the presbytery and the contributors to purchase copies of their book. For example, Baltimore Presbytery purchased 100 copies of their book. 20 copies were available at General Assembly, and 80 copies were used as give copies to each contributor and the remaining copies were made available to others. In addition, several of the contributors bought copies for themselves.

The books will be distributed by Ingram Content, the world’s largest book distributor and will be available on Amazon and other online outlets, including Kindle.

Words that speak justice matter. Our goal is to publish at least 20 books from around the country which speak the gospel in love during these noisy times.
