Parson's Porch & Company

Turning Words into Books & Books into Bread since 2004

Parson's Porch & Book Publishing is a book publishing company with a double focus.  We focus on the needs of creative writers who need a professional publisher to turn their words into books, & we also focus on the needs of others by turning their books into bread by sharing our profits with those who are homeless and displaced by meeting their basic needs of food, clothing, shelter and safety.

The Gospel readings in Cycle C of the common lectionary come primarily from the Gospel of Luke, with a secondary emphasis on the Gospel of John. Most Christians seem to prefer these two Gospels over Matthew and Mark. New Testament scholars mostly agree that Mark was written first about 70 C.E., and that Matthew and Luke, writing around 80-85 C.E., used over 90 percent of Mark in the writing of their Gospels. Both Matthew and Luke contain material that is common to both that scholars have called the “Q source;” and both have material unique to each of them, simply called the “M source” for Matthew and the “L source” for Luke. The Gospel of John was written closer to the end of the first Christian century, and its author does not seem to have in hand written copies of Matthew, Mark, or Luke to use in the writing of his Gospel. However, John did have access to the oral tradition of Jesus that continued to be revered after the first Gospels were written, and these oral stories of Jesus were at first given more authority than the written stories.
