Writing a book is a calling.  At least it was for me.  When I began my career as a worship pastor forty years ago, writing a book about worship was not part of my plan.  Back then, I was simply devoted to my craft and passionate about the wave of change that was overtaking evangelical churches in the realm of worship.  It started with those transcendent experiences in the early Jesus People Movement when we would sing Jerry Sinclair’s “Alleluia.”  I sensed something that I had never felt before in church.  God was on the move and worship was a big part of it.  In the 1970’s, I attended Biola College in Southern California and took a class in worship taught be Bruce Leafblad.  At the time, he was the Music Minister at Lake Avenue Congregational Church in Pasadena where Ray Ortland was the Senior Minister.  Something very special was happening at Lake Avenue and Leafblad brought it with him when he taught worship at Biola.  He introduced me to the writings of A.W. Tozer, whose heart and pen were aflame for the glory of God.  I’ve considered Tozer one of my spiritual “mentors” through his writings ever since then.  Further, Professor Leafblad’s approach to worship was traditional, incorporating the best of hymnody and liturgy and it provided the perfect counter-balance to the immersion of contemporary worship that I was experiencing with the new songs coming out of Calvary Chapel, just thirty minutes down the freeway.
